Athletes Stern Liffa and Asimenye Simwaka are looking forward to leaving a mark at this year’s Commonwealth Games after making a grade during the African Senior Athletics Championships in Mauritius.

Liffa is already in camp while Simwaka went straight to Malawi Armed Forces College in Salima District to complete her military training and will join camp later. Liffa said he was determined to perform well at the Games.

“I competed against top athletes in Africa and I am happy with my performance. I will not relax ahead of the Games.”

Simwaka also said she was confident of doing well,” I am really motivated to do well. I want to do my country proud.” she said.

As a token of appreciation for the two runners outstanding performance, Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) rewarded the two runners and their coach Pachisi Nyasulu, with K250,000.00 each.

Simwaka and Liffa set best personal best records in the Indian Ocean Island nation to qualify for the Games.

Upon arrival on Wednesday, the two athletes receive a warm welcome at Sunbird Hotels luncheon at Sunbird Capital in Lilongwe. MOC Treasurer General Henry Sakala said they were happy with the runner’s performance.

“We are happy with the performance of the athletes and we want others to perform well. Time has come for Malawian athletes to start winning medals. Whatever they receive is aimed at motivating them to lift medals at Commonwealth Games.”

Malawi is expected to send athletes in Netball, boxing, aquatic, judo and athletics. Liffa set a new personal best of 10:33 from 10:58 in 100metres (m) and 20.92 in 200m.
