Malawi will be sending a delegation of 39 people including 22 athletes, 6 Coaches, 2 Doctors and 9 Technical officials to the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games slated to start on 28 July 2022.

The delegation was unveiled during the sendoff ceremony held at Sunbird Capital in Lilongwe on Monday 18 July, 2022 night.

Minister of Youth and Sports Richard Chimwendo Banda urged Team Malawi to fight for honour.

“They are carrying Malawi’s flag and it is our wish that they should bring medals. We have talented athletes and it is my hope that they will do well.”

The First group, which included Malawi’s Chef de mission to the Games Heney Sakala, who is Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) will leave today before the final group departs on Friday.

The athletes were ready to rumble.” This time, we have no tourists and everybody looks in shape. I am very confident that Malawi will bring something back home.”

Malawi Netball National Team, the Queens, headline the list of members of delegation to the Commonwealth Games.

Twelve players and five officials are expected to travel to Birmingham Games.

Top Netball Team player Mawi Kumenda, Joyce Mvula, Caroline Mtukule, Takondwa Lwazi and Jane Chimaliro are part of the squad for the Commonwealth Games.

In athletics, team Malawi has Asimenye Simwaka, Stern Liffa, Farook Mponda and Pachisi Nyasulu. The list also comprises three boxers Elias Bonzo, Luwis Zakeyu Mbewe, Natasha Maya and Coach Kassim Makwinja.

In Judo, Team Malawi will be represented by Austin Chikwapula and Harriet Bonface and coach Christopher Chilasa. Two swimmers Tsinde Kumbatira and Jessica Makwenda and Coach Brave Liffa.

Dr Jones Kaponda Masiye, who is also MOC Commissioner, is the team doctor. Meanwhile, the deligation has received a timely boost after MultiChoice Malawi donated GOtv Decoders to each of the 39 members. – Mavuto Kambuwe
