The Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC) has reaffirmed its commitment to developing well-rounded young athletes by hosting a Youth Empowerment and Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) Workshop in Mchinji. The initiative brought together learners and young athletes to explore the importance of education, responsible decision-making, and safeguarding their sporting futures.
Speaking during the workshop, Asimenye Simwaka, Chairperson of the MOC Athletes Commission and Executive Board Member of MOC emphasized that academic success is a key pillar in an athlete’s growth. She encouraged the participants to remain focused on their education, noting that learning opens wider opportunities and helps athletes navigate challenges both on and off the field.
MOC Director General Naomie Chinatu explained that the Committee was compelled to act following recent Ministry of Health reports indicating a rise in teenage pregnancies within Mchinji District. She highlighted that MOC’s mandate includes promoting environments in which young athletes can thrive physically, mentally, and socially.Participants welcomed the workshop and its practical lessons. Tiyanjane Henry, one of the young athletes in attendance, said the discussions motivated her to work harder in school while keeping her sporting ambitions alive. Mchinji District Sports Officer, Martin Panyanja, expressed appreciation for the programme, describing it as a timely intervention that supports youth development in the district.
To deliver expert guidance, MOC partnered with the Family Planning Association of Malawi (FPAM), facilitated by Carolyn Mbeya and Griffin Kaonga who provided age appropriate SRH information aimed at equipping the youth with knowledge and skills to protect their future and remain committed to their athletic pursuits.
Through this initiative, MOC continues to promote the holistic development of young athletes by aligning sports, education, and health awareness as essential components of long term success.
