The Malawi Olympic Committee (MOC), with support from the Olympic Solidarity, has conducted a two-day Athlete365 Career+ Workshop in Lilongwe aimed at preparing athletes’ life after competitive sport.

The workshop brought together athletes from different sporting disciplines and focused on holistic development, equipping participants with skills for future careers as leaders, entrepreneurs, and active community members. Facilitated by Lechedzani Luza (El Master), the sessions guided athletes through self-discovery, helping them identify their strengths, talents, and passions, while also providing practical training in Curriculum Vitae and covering letter writing.

“Skills gained in sport such as discipline, teamwork, and resilience can be transferred into professional life and business opportunities,” said Luza. He emphasized that athletes already possess valuable qualities that can support successful careers beyond sport.

Participants said the workshop was eye-opening and empowering. Mercy Nakoma, who is a hockey player, indicated that the workshop has helped her to better understand future plans after her sporting career.

“The workshop has helped me to better understand my future plans after my sporting career,” said Nakoma.

Wrestler Stanbeg Chusanga said the workshop has strengthened his path towards self-reliance.

“This workshop has strengthened my path towards self-reliance,” said Chusanga.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, MOC Vice Secretary General Dennis Kumwenda praised the initiative and thanked the Olympic Solidarity for its support, saying it reflects MOC’s commitment to developing athletes beyond competition.

“The athlete voice is a critical catalyst for change in modern sports hence the need to equip them,” said Kumwenda.

Held under the theme “Power up your future,” the workshop ended with certificate presentations, marking a successful effort to prepare athletes for life after sport.
