The recently concluded O!YES Youth Sports Tournament, hosted by the Malawi Olympafrica Center, has been celebrated as a powerful demonstration of Africa’s commitment to grassroots sports development and youth empowerment. The event brought together young athletes from diverse communities to showcase their sporting talents, technical skills, and personal growth.
A Testament to Africa’s Commitment
Speaking on the sidelines of the event, James Mangani, Olympafrica Center Director, described the tournament as:
“A clear testament of Africa’s commitment to promoting grassroots sports development across member countries.”
He emphasized that the tournament was the culmination of months of training, workshops, and inclusion programs, representing a significant milestone in nurturing young talent:
“The Malawi Olympafrica Center is grooming a lot of talent. The youths who patronize our center are gaining valuable technical skills. Most importantly, we let them play. That’s our main goal—ensuring that children participate in all kinds of sporting activities.”
Impact on Education and Community
The tournament served as a celebration of various O!YES programs, including inclusive sports sessions and sustainability workshops. According to Virgita Chikoti, a teacher at Mlodza Primary School, these activities have had a positive impact on school attendance:
“This tournament helps learners in our communities and even at school. Most of the girls and boys are staying in school because they want to participate in different activities like athletics and football. They don’t want to miss class because they love being part of the games.”
Youth Voices: Opportunities Through Sports
Among the young participants, Khumbolawo Banda shared her perspective on how sports is creating new opportunities:
“I encourage my friends to take sports seriously. It can become a career path—especially for those of us who may not finish our education. Sports can give us opportunities, like joining the Malawi Defense Force or working as officials under Olympafrica.”
Celebrating Excellence
Outstanding schools and individual athletes were awarded medals and trophies in various disciplines such as the 100-meter and 200-meter races, football, and basketball, recognizing their exceptional performance during the tournament.
Sustainability and Support Programs
As part of its broader sustainability efforts, Olympafrica Malawi, through the O!YES initiative, distributed hygienic menstrual products in June to support girls’ education and well-being. The program will officially conclude with a vibrant celebration of O!YES Day in early July.
This year’s O!YES Youth Sports Tournament not only highlighted the power of play in youth development but also reinforced the importance of holistic, inclusive, and sustainable community programs that uplift and inspire.
