Dr Donald Rukare has been elected President of Commonwealth Sport at its General Assembly in Glasgow, becoming the first President from the African continent. He assumes the role ahead of Glasgow 2026 and the Centenary Games in Amdavad, India, in 2030, marking a historic moment for the Movement.
Rukare brings over three decades of leadership in sport, law, and diplomacy, including roles as Vice President of Africa Aquatics, President of Commonwealth Games Uganda, and Interim President of Commonwealth Sport. His election reflects the confidence of 74 member nations in his vision for a united, athlete-centred, and strategically progressive Commonwealth Sport Movement.
He pledged to place athletes at the heart of the Movement and advance the ‘Games Reset’, enabling more nations to host sustainably. Key priorities include strengthening member CGAs, expanding GAPS and eqUIP programmes, and fostering partnerships to engage new audiences worldwide.
Dr Rukare said:
“I am honoured by the trust placed in me and pledge to serve with integrity and passion. Together, we will build on the momentum of Glasgow 2026, prepare for Malta 2027, and deliver an inspiring Centenary Games in India in 2030.”
Katie Sadleir, CEO of Commonwealth Sport, added:
“Donald’s leadership comes at a pivotal moment, aligning with our ‘Commonwealth United’ vision to support athletes and excite fans worldwide.”
