Yesterday, 3rd October 2026, Malawi proudly received the Africa Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games Torch at a colourful ceremony held at the Bingu National Stadium.
The Torch, which was handed over from the Republic of Botswana, was officially received by Hon. Alfred Gangata, Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, from Mr. Concecao, Official from the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of the Games. From Malawi, the Torch will now head to Zambia as it continues its inspirational journey across the region.
This momentous occasion marks the official countdown to the 11th Edition of the AUSC Region 5 Games, scheduled to be held in Maputo, Mozambique from 4th to 13th December, 2026. Ten (10) Region 5 Member Countries are expected to send Under-20 athletes to compete for medals.
The ceremony was graced by several sports leaders and dignitaries including the Principal Secretary Mr. Jameson Ndalama, Director of Sports Mr. Justice Msopera, Chairman of Malawi National Council of Sports Mr. Jim Kalua, Acting Chief Executive Officer Ms. Ivy Chinangwa, Lilongwe City Mayor Councillor Alex Peter Banda, Malawi Olympic Committee Vice Secretary General Mr. Dennis Kumwenda, and other officials from National Sports Associations and the corporate world.
Activities of the day included the official torch lighting, a torch relay, and traditional dances. Primary and secondary school students also participated in the ceremony, adding colour and youthful energy to the celebration.
Malawi reaffirms its commitment to the values of unity, excellence, and youth empowerment embodied by the Region 5 Games.
