OCGAM The Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association of Malawi (OCGAM) is the Mother body responsible for Olympics and Commonwealth Games operations, publicity and development in Malawi, specifically providing and organizing funding, clothing, travel, accommodation and accreditation of athletes and officials to each Olympics and Commonwealth Games. The OCGAM is both an incorporated association and a non-profit organization. MISSION STATEMENTWe are Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association of Malawi committed to protect and promote the Olympic and Commonwealth games movements and provide opportunities to all Malawians in sports through maximum utilization of Olympic, Commonwealth and Government support for the athletes to compete and excel at all levels while highly valuing excellence in performance and good governance. VISIONThe Olympic and Commonwealth Games Associating of Malawi is to develop sports in Malawi in a sustainable and structured framework to the highest possible level by linking programmes of Olympic Solidarity, Commonwealth Games Federation and Government for the common goal of achieving mass participation, while providing pathway to high performance athletes to win medals. BACKGROUNDEstablishment and Mandate of OCGAM The Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association of Malawi (OCGAM) was formed in 1967 and it is an organization belonging to the Olympic Movement under the provisions of the Olympic Charter and World Anti-Doping Code. The mandate of OCGAM is “to promote peace and sports for all and also to support and encourage the promotion of sport ethics, to fight against doping and to demonstrate responsible concern for environmental, cultural, corruption and HIV Aids issues ”. Former Presidents are: Mr. John Magombo 1967-1976 Dr. Moses Chirambo 1976-1980 Dr. Chimphangwi 1980-1987 Rt. Chief Justice Richard Banda 1987-2003 Mr. Jerome Waluza 2003-2005 Mr. Floriano Massah 2005 The constitution set out the following as the objectives of OCGAM: (a) To develop and protect the Olympic Charter in Malawi (b) To ensure the observance of the Olympic Charter in Malawi (c) To propagate the fundamental principles of Olympian at national level within the framework of sports activity and otherwise contribute to the diffusion of Olympian in the teaching programmes of physical education and sport in schools and institutions of higher learning. (d) To encourage the creation of institutions which devote themselves to Olympic education. (e) To participate in and encourage the development of high performance sport as well as sport at grassroots level. (f) To help develop among people the culture of participating in sport for all (g) To organize courses and workshops, local and international, for sports administrators, coaches and technical officials (h) To commit itself to taking action against any form of discrimination and violence in sport (i) To adopt and implement the World Anti-Doping Code, thereby ensuring that the anti-doping policies and rules, membership and or funding requirements and results management procedures conform with the World Anti-Doping Code and respect all the roles and responsibilities for NCOs that are listed within the World Anti-Doping Code. (j) While ensuring autonomy, work to maintain harmonious and cooperative relations with appropriate governmental, local and international non –governmental organizations and resist pressures of a political, religious or economic nature. (k) To protect the Olympic Symbols in Malawi from commercial and other abuses. (l) To safeguard its autonomy as defined in the Olympic CharterGoals: The OCGAM is run by a Board of Management and represented by OCGAM Affiliates. The day to day administration of the Association is the responsibility of the Secretariat.
